Howzit!!

The food here in Durban is just like food at home, and i have not had a burger. (yet) but today i went to a Zulu village and was served a wonderful lunch of mealies (mashed corn like mashed potatoes), squash, spinach, crushed tomatoes, and cabbage. I was nervous to try it but i did and I liked it!!!
Wow! She must have a strong neck!
I have been drinking a lot of water but no DDP!
the women wear a special head dress to help them carry many things on their heads.
the only pets i have seen have been just a few dogs.
I haven't seen any wild animals or cool birds yet we are still too close to the city.
New words for you- Izzit? (oh really?)
                                    Ja-nee-(maybe)
                                    Tula-be quiet
Abby i will check on the names of the local fish for you.
Have a super night- I'm off to Cape Town tomorrow (sat.)

hamba kakuhle-go well!

REALLY BUSY DAY!!!

Howzit!! things are going great. I had three professional meetings today. One with the directors of the parks and recreation of Durban. Boy are they trying to do some great stuff with the local children. the second meeting was kind of cool! we had a tour of the brand new stadium they built for the Soccer World Club. We were even allowed in the locker rooms! The third meeting was talking with college professors from the university in Durban. we discussed how PE teachers are trained in their country.

Hey Star, Courtney and Ben- Glad you are having fun dancing-I will be learning a Zulu dance tomorrow (Friday) The food has been really good and its ok to drink the water here in Durban.

Howzit fourth grade- Yes i really ate it and no it wasn't fish lol-chicken spring roll! My room is on the 20th floor and the windows open and there are no screens! no bugs so no screens but i feel like i might fall out!! (i'll be careful) The braclets are still in my hands and will be until Monday. The temp. today was 32 C (thats a good homework problem for you).

Hey Miss Powell-Thanks for all the updates! Gina says howzit to you!!

Wow! Only two weeks until I go!!

Wow! I can't believe there are only two weeks until I begin my journey. I have so much to still do: one more shot (ouch), find a good book for the plane rides, practice taking pictures, learn  how to skype, get a hair cut, cut down on my Dr. Pepper intake (not sure they will have it over there), practice saying some important African phases (howzit=hello; takkies=sneakers; goeie more=good morning; yebo=yes; tot siens=till we see each other again.). Well, it's time I must begin my list. Tot Siens!!
P.S. Homework coming on Tuesday :)

Here's a word problem for you.

I leave for South Africa on Monday, November 1st at 5:00 pm from Washington DC.. I arrive in Johannesburg South Africa, at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, November 2nd. I will have two meals on the airplane, dinner and breakfast. How many hours will I be on the airplane? Remember South Africa is six hours ahead of our time (if it's 12:00pm in Maine it's 6:00pm in South Africa).
Good luck!

Friday, September 24, 2010

Well, in a little over a month, my journey to South Africa will begin. All flight arrangements have been made; I got an early Christmas present from my mom (new suitcase); I have been sharing the news about the trip with my students; the fourth and fifth graders are excited about making friendship bracelets for the new students I will be meeting on this journey; I have been researching PE in South Africa and checking out some of the wildlife (The Big Five) I may see. Life is good!!
